The Market talis - Motion and Presece detectors by Grässlin

Intelligent

The talis motion and presence detector from Grässlin controls lighting by recognizing the presence of people in a room or in its immediate vicinity. As soon as it detects body heat or movement, it automatically switches on the light. If neither is no longer detected, the light is switched off automatically after a pre-set time. In this way, energy is used in a sensible and targeted manner. Unnecessary power consumption is a thing of the past.

Cutting energy consumption

Almost a third of the energy used in factories and industrial buildings goes into the lighting. Here there is even higher potential for optimization. Whether in offices, meeting rooms, hallways, or the bathrooms, intelligent lighting control strategies with the talis motion and presence detectors help to use light, and with it, energy, only where it is actually needed. In this way, the energy costs can be cut in some areas by more than half and the environment is protected.

Solutions

The option to combine talis motion and presence detectors with intelligent time-switch clock technology and solutions for temperature and light control from Grässlin gives you a decisive advantage: Why compare different providers and systems? With Grässlin, you get energy efficiency from a single source.

MOTION AND PRESENCE DETECTORS How do motion and presence detectors work? And what is the difference between them? What technology is used, and what do I need to bear in mind when fitting them? People whose daily work involves them thinking about motion and presence detectors grapple with questions like these and other similar ones. In the following pages, we would like to give lighting designers, specialist trades, electrical installers and facility managers some useful information and tips on this subject.

Motion and Presence detectors help to activate lights where they are actually necessary or are badly needed. And then only in those places. This produces the following benefits and advantages for the user:

Greater energy efficiency

In some areas, for instance in offices, meeting rooms, corridors or toilets, motion and presence sensors help to cut energy costs by more than half. As a result, a building can be given an A or B energy efficiency rating.

Greater security

In dark entrance areas, driveways or underground garages, talis motion and presence sensors contribute to safety decisively via the early detection of unwelcome visitors or the precautionary illumination of areas.

More convenient

In situations and rooms where you often find you have your hands full, such as when entering a store room with your hands full, talis motion and presence sensors make things easier. Motion and presence sensors also allow you to control heating, air con and ventilation units as needed – another way to make things easier for you.

TECHNOLOGY AND DIFFERENCES

Grässlin‘s talis motion and presence sensors operate using the principle of passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor) systems.

Motion detectors

A motion detectors measures the temperature of moving objects, using infrared technology. If a heat source is detected, it checks the light level (LUX). If this is below a specified limit, a light is switched on. Depending on the timer setting, the light is then switched off again after a specified period.

Presence detectors

A presence detectors operates similarly in terms of technology, but – unlike the motion sensor – the light is measuredcontinuously. This makes the presence sensor particularly well-suited to areas where people tend to stay for longer periods, such as offices or sports halls. Unlike a motion sensor, presence sensors permanently measure the brightness level. As a result, they are either able to add artificial light in situations where there is insufficient daylight or switch off the artificial lighting if there is adequate daylight.

Most common applications

  • Offices

    Restrooms

  • Class rooms

    Staircases

  • Meeting and working rooms

    Building entrances

  • Corridors

    Hallways

  • Hotel rooms

    Basements and cellars

  • Gyms

    Driveways

MOTION DETECTORS:
talis motion sensors operate using the principle of passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor) systems. They react to changes in temperature within their field of detection, e.g. a person walking past, and depending on the light level setting they switch on the connected consumer unit for an adjustable period. The primary purpose of talis motion sensors is to switch on lights when movement is identified. These motion sensors are suitable for use in interior areas such as in halls, landings or cellars, but can then also be used, depending on suitability, in exterior areas on entrances to buildings.

CASE STUDY
Graesslin talis Controls Community Center Common Areas

Customer: Ci Yuan Community Club – Singapore

Located in Ang Mo Kio, Ci Yuan Community Club is a four-storey, 6,000 square metre club that officially opened on September 20, 2015. The club is the first of its kind in Singapore as it contains a hawker centre, family medical clinic, a 500 seat theatre, senior care centre and several recreational facilities.

The facility was put in place based on feedback from neighborhood residents looking to foster closer community ties and provide facilities for elderly residents.

Application: Lighting control for common areas

Singapore is a very energy conscious country and when Ci Yuan Community Club determined their lighting plan, motion sensors were included in the budget. Lighting is a large amount of the utility usage and cost in a facility of this size and it was determined that sensors would save them approximately 25% every month. In addition, the facility caters to the elderly and by having motion sensors it provides an extra level of convenience for such visitors.

Product: talis PS 360-7-1

The above presence detector from Graesslin was used to control lighting in various common areas within the community club: restrooms, corridors, entrances, and staircases. A total of 120 pieces were for this particular project and were supplied by Graesslin’s distribution partner, Acee Electric.

Benefit / Conclusion: Highly Functional Controls with Easy Access

The Graesslin product was chosen over large competitors like Schneider Electric, because our product allowed better control over important application settings such as: lux level, metre range, time control, and the ability to shade areas for more specific control of detection angles.
